Nature and the past have left a gift on top of a volcano in El Salvador.
Located in the municipality of Alegría in the Department of Usulután, lies at the bottom of the crater of the Volcano Tecapa, the Laguna de Alegria, this is considered one of the most beautiful places in the country.
Its waters are greenish yellow, due to its volcanic origin, reason why they are attributed to him healing properties. Among other attractions of the place you can mention its hot springs and fumaroles.
This lagoon was baptized as “The Emerald of America” by the Chilean nobel poet, Gabriela Mistral
The city of Alegría lies on the slopes of the Volcano Tecapa, at a height of 1,300 meters above sea level. What makes it one of the coolest cities in the country.
This has allowed the cultivation of coffee and other plants that are not found in many parts of El Salvador. The city has great tourist attractions, among which stands out its beautiful volcanic lagoon.
The lagoon has an easy access through a cobbled street that crosses coffee plantations. The entrance is controlled and there are restrictions to ensure the environmental conservation of the site. The lagoon of Alegria owes its emerald color to the sulfur and minerals found in the crater of the volcano.
Legend has it that at night there is a mermaid who enchants all the young virgins who come to take a bath in the waters. Another of the legends that counts the place is the “enchanted Palmerito”, a small tree that is in the walls of the crater and that has the quality to move at pleasure.
